Discover Minneriya National Park, world-famous for the spectacular "Elephant Gathering," an extraordinary wildlife event where hundreds of wild Asian elephants congregate around an ancient reservoir.

Situated in the heart of Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle, Minneriya National Park is a world-renowned wildlife sanctuary famous for hosting one of Asia’s greatest natural spectacles—The Gathering. Built around the historic 3rd-century Minneriya Wewa (reservoir) constructed by King Mahasen, the park’s lush grasslands and drying reservoir bed attract vast herds of wild Asian elephants during the dry season. Beyond its iconic elephant herds, Minneriya is home to diverse ecosystems ranging from tropical dry mixed evergreen forests to wetlands, sheltering sloth bears, leopards, sambar deer, and rare waterbirds.
July through October is the dry season, marking the peak period for "The Elephant Gathering" as water sources dry up elsewhere, forcing wild herds to aggregate at Minneriya Wewa.
