Overview

Spanning across the Sabaragamuwa and Uva Provinces, Udawalawe National Park is one of Sri Lanka’s most popular and accessible wildlife sanctuaries. Created to provide a sanctuary for wild animals displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir, the park features expansive open grasslands, teak forests, and bushlands that resemble an African savanna. World-famous for its thriving population of several hundred Asian elephants, Udawalawe offers almost guaranteed elephant sightings alongside waterbirds, mugger crocodiles, deer, and water buffaloes.

  • Guaranteed sightings of large wild Asian elephant herds
  • Open savanna-like landscape offering excellent photography visibility
  • Scenic Udawalawe Reservoir surrounded by distant mountain ranges
  • Elephant Transit Home (ETH) rehabilitation center located nearby
  • Rich variety of endemic and migratory bird species
  • Thrilling 4x4 open-top jeep safari experience
